Okay, so what we are talking about here is Wet Gilding or Mechanical Gilding...
Gilding is the process of applying something like gold, or in this case (lets hope) gold to the surface of an object to simulate the appearance of an object made of gold.
Wet Gilding utilizes chloride of gold with a good deal of Ether. The solution is painted onto an object, and as the Ether evaporates, the gold is deposited. The object can then be heated and pollished.
Mechanical Gilding is the use of hot and cold burnishing, to acheive the same result...
